How To: Paint Stucco

Stucco House Painting Guide

Stucco painting provides a facelift to any home, but there are key aspects to consider when undertaking a project. A few things to consider include:
1. Your stucco finish type and material
2. Your desired color choice
3. The desired or recommended type of paint
4. Logistics such as height or clearance (space between the home and obstructions)

Finish Types

One of the first things you must know about your stucco is the type of final finish that was applied on the surface. The majority of laypersons would not be able to distinguish between a synthetic acrylic stucco finish and a conventional sand and cement finish that was painted afterwards. Additionally there are specialty finishes but we will avoid those for now. See finish types below.

Finish Materials

Synthetic Stucco

The synthetic acrylic stucco finish is sometimes called Dryvit, based on a popular brand of that product. This type of synthetic finish comes in a bucket, it's the final finish product of stucco with color added integrally to the final coat to be applied. The product can perform well and last many years but eventually, one or a few things may happen.
  • The finish is weathered by exposure to the sun
  • The finish is compromised by cracking in the stucco
  • The finish must be reapplied due to repairs in the area
  • The finish color is no longer pleasing to the ownership or the specific color or type falls out of fashion

In many or all of these scenarios, it may be necessary or cost effective to paint over the old finish.
This type of finish is very common over EIFS installations, and EIFS installations are in turn very common over commercial buildings.

Sand Cement Finish, Painted After

Picture
CalThe more conventional stucco finish consists of sand and cement. The sand is usually sieve-filtered to achieve uniformity of sand particles. The resulting finish must then be painted to achieve the desired color. This type of finish is painted since the beginning so there are few surprises when it comes to repainting walls with this type of stucco.
From the picture or even on site, it's usually difficult to tell what type of finish you have. The house in the picture has a torpedo sand (unfiltered) finish that has been painted white. Your stucco contractor (us!) can tell you what type of finish you may have. Call today at 832-720-6828.

Color

Color Change

The color of the paint is another critical factor. For homeowner desiring a color change, the best option is not to look through a color wheel or multiple color tabs. We usually recommend picking a popular color that is close to what you're looking for. The reason is that people with better eyes for color fashions and palettes would have already made a good decision for us. But you are the customer so pick to your heart's content!

Color Match

If the current color of the wall is desired, this is also a very doable process.
Picture
We would obtain a sample of the color in the form of a painted cover, a painted fixture, or a painted pipe that can be removed from the wall. When none of these are available we are able to use power tools to literally break off a big enough piece from the wall so that the wonderful people at the paint store can make a color match.

When dealing with repairs and patchwork (so to speak) often times it is necessary to paint a large enough area so that the slight differences in color are not as visible.
