About Stucco Homes
Stucco is a beautiful siding product for homes that has great durability when cared for, just like other siding products. However, it does have a few important requirements in maintenance that must be followed to avoid any bigger problems down the road.
Many homes use stucco in Houston, in Texas, nationally and abroad. Stucco is a cementitious finish plastered unto the exterior (and sometimes interior) walls of a home or business. Stucco was once plastered unto another existing exterior cladding such as brick or masonry block but nowadays the exterior siding itself is plastered directly onto the plywood substrate within a metal reinforcement matrix.
The reinforcement for the cement comes in the form of a galvanized metal lath that is a grid of metal reinforcement. The galvanization gives the metal added corrosion resistance against moisture. The components of the metal lath are as follows
Metal Lath
This is the continuous reinforcement used to give strength to the stucco cement.
Corners
This is a metallic corner that gives stucco its clean edges. The corners also have a portion of lath that allows it to blend into the overall metal lath matrix
Joints
This metal component allows the craftsmen to properly include a joint in the stucco to allow for movement. When ample joints are installed this reduces cracking of the stucco because the stucco has more places to expand to.
Weep Screed
This component is placed at the bottom of all stucco to allow moisture to escape at the bottom of the structure when it does manage to get in. Unfortunately there will always be some moisture that manages to get in and we must work to mitigate the effect it will have on the building envelope.
Weatherproofing paper
The metal lath framework is mechanically attached to the framing and plywood building envelope. Between the raw lumber substrate and the metal and stucco will be a weatherproofing paper that is water resistant but permeable to allow water to escape.

3-step Stucco
Cement is plastered unto the wall in three steps once the metal matrix is ready to receive the plaster.
Scratch coat
This is the very first coat and is attached directly to the metal lath and is formulated to be very strong concrete. In any concreting process one must take note of the concrete strength in terms of psi. The coat is literally scratched to leave grooves for the next coat.
Brown Coat
The brown coat of cement is the next plastering step. This step levels out the surface in preparation for the final finish step.
Finish Coat
On the finish coat, our craftsmen use the correct finishing technique to achieve the desired result. The finish coat must have the appropriate size of sand particles desired by the customer or to match the present stucco.
Paint
Stucco is primed with a masonry primer that fills as many voids in the concrete as possible and this prepares the surface for the final paint coat. Elastomeric paint is used on stucco as a waterproofing measure.
Manufacturers have formulated paints to perform well but their recommendations must be followed. We strive to be a stucco contractor that also understands the paint process needed for all projects. The paint is a great component that adds years to the lifespan of the house.
Caulk
We strive to always use quality caulk in all of our installations. Not only that, we also strive to apply caulk by always following appropriate best practices. Caulk protects the stucco at various terminations where the plaster cement or paint will not protect the underlying substrate. Corners, windows, doors, window and door frames, terminations next to roof, siding, soffit and other components all need proper caulk installation.
Proper caulk installation is crucially important to prevent any problems with the building envelope.
